LL96 Match Day 8 Recap
Did Sinbad actually star in a movie called Shazaam? The world may never know.
Match Day 8
1. What city in southwestern Sweden is that country's second-largest city and chief seaport, as well as a commercial center for shipbuilding, food processing, chemicals, and its namesake heavy metal subgenre?
Pre-answer thoughts: This one is a gimme because I studied abroad in Stockholm in undergrad. The answer here is Gothenburg, or Göteborg in Swedish.
Correct answer: Gothenburg/Göteborg
Was I correct? Yes.
How much of LL got it right? 29%
Points assigned to opponent: 0
Was opponent correct? No.
Points assigned to me: 1
Current score: 1(1)-0(0)
Points assigned to Private Rundle opponent: 1
Was opponent correct? Yes.
Points assigned to me: 2
Current score: 2(1)-1(1)
Post-answer thoughts: I actually never made it to Gothenburg while I lived in Sweden, but from what I’ve heard the metal scene is not as good there as it once was.
2. "Forest person" is the English translation (from Malay) of the name of what primate, which is fitting because it is both the most arboreal of all primates and the largest arboreal mammal?
Pre-answer thoughts: I spent a long time deliberating on this one, and stupidly settled on an animal that’s not a primate — a koala — because I knew it lived in a tree and was fairly large. Also I thought “Koala” sounded like part of Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur.
Correct answer: Orangutan
Was I correct? No.
How much of LL got it right? 74%
Points assigned to opponent: 2
Was opponent correct? No.
Points assigned to me: 2
Current score: 1(1)-0(0)
Points assigned to Private Rundle opponent: 2
Was opponent correct? Yes.
Points assigned to me: 1
Current score: 2(1)-3(2)
Post-answer thoughts: I never even really considered orangutan, because I thought that name came from the color orange! Oh well. Total whiff there, but not a great outcome for a question that 3/4 of LL got right.
3. In geometry, "explementary angles" is the term for a pair of angles that add up to 360°. What are the corresponding terms, in order, for angles that add up to 90° and 180°?
Pre-answer thoughts: I’m pretty sure I remember these being “complementary” and “supplementary” from high school geometry class. That definitely rings a bell.
Correct answer: Complementary, Supplementary
Was I correct? Yes.

Current score: 1(2)-1(1)
Points assigned to Private Rundle opponent: 3 — math is his worst subject.
Was opponent correct? Yes.
Points assigned to me: 0
Current score: 2(2)-6(3)
Post-answer thoughts: I didn’t even notice the part about “in order” in the question, so I’m glad I just wrote it down that way.
4. A classic 1990s movie about a wish-granting genie with the title Shazaam never existed, and it definitely didn't star what comedian who got his start as a finalist on the show Star Search before featuring in A Different World and his own namesake sitcom, as well as numerous actual films?
Pre-answer thoughts: Nice! A question about the Mandela Effect! When I first started reading this question, I was wondering where this was going. Would he be looking for the actual movie Kazaam, starring NBA player Shaquille O’Neal? No, it’s just looking for the actor who was apparently the star of this movie that never existed. In this case, it’s the comedian Sinbad.
Correct answer: Sinbad
Was I correct? Yes.
How much of LL got it right? 64%
Points assigned to opponent: 3 — film isn’t one of his best subjects.
Was opponent correct? No.
Points assigned to me: 1
Current score: 2(3)-1(1)
Points assigned to Private Rundle opponent: 1
Was opponent correct? Yes.
Points assigned to me: 1
Current score: 3(2)-7(4)
Post-answer thoughts: Sinbad himself has addressed this alleged movie on his Twitter account several times, including this hilarious tweet:

There was also a very interesting article a few years ago about the whole concept of false memory, the Mandela effect, and the idea that a movie called “Shazaam” ever existed.
5. The 1978 poetry collection The Black Unicorn and the groundbreaking memoirs Zami (1982), and The Cancer Journals (1980) are among the celebrated works of what American author, who often introduced herself at public engagements as a "Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet"?
Pre-answer thoughts: Like Doris Lessing yesterday, I think this will play tough. I’m also not sure about the answer, but I think bell hooks is a good guess here.
Correct answer: Audre Lorde
Was I correct? No.
How much of LL got it right? 16%
Points assigned to opponent: 1 — Despite this being a tough question, he knows his literature, so I’ll assign a low value here.
Was opponent correct? No.
Points assigned to me: 3
Current score: 2(3)-1(1)
Points assigned to Private Rundle opponent: 2
Was opponent correct? No.
Points assigned to me: 3
Current score: 3(2)-7(4)
Post-answer thoughts: I have heard of this poet’s name but never would have come up with it. Zami, the memoir mentioned in the question, discusses why she changed her first name from Audrey to Audre.
6. A kingdom known as Silla existed for nearly one thousand years, much of that time as one-third of a "Three Kingdoms" period, on what peninsula?
Pre-answer thoughts: When I think of Three Kingdoms, I think of China. I don’t know of any peninsulas in China, but I could guess one nearby. I don’t think it’s Malay since there was a Malay-related question already today, so what about going further north? Korea is on a peninsula, right? I’ll guess that.
Correct answer: Korea
Was I correct? Yes.
How much of LL got it right? 44%
Points assigned to opponent: 2
Was opponent correct? Yes.
Points assigned to me: 2
Points assigned to Private Rundle opponent: 0 — world history is one of his best subjects.
Was opponent correct? Yes.
Points assigned to me: 2
Post-answer thoughts: A good educated guess here; however there was a separate Three Kingdoms period in Korea as well.
Result: Win over KochJG, 4(4)-3(2)
Current Standings in Rundle B Byzantium: 2nd of 28 (6-2-0)
Private Rundle Result: Loss to SheehanC, 5(4)-7(5)
Current Standings in Private Rundle: 3rd of 8 (4-2-2)
Overall thoughts: I overcame a terrible guess and subpar defense to win this match day, but overall this seemed like a tough day across the board in LL. What helped out was my experience living in Sweden, as well as the wrong thought process that led to the right answer for question 6.
So far I’m off to a good start to LL96, but there’s still a lot of this season to play, so there are no guarantees I can keep up this pace throughout the entire season.
