Match Day 23
1. Coming of Age in Samoa (1928), Growing Up in New Guinea (1930), and Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies (1935) are among the works of what progressive social anthropologist, who was a regular contributor to Redbook magazine beginning in 1962?
Pre-answer thoughts: This one took a while for me to think of — I definitely knew the person but I couldn’t quite place her name. I knew it was Margaret something… Margaret Sanger? No she was a birth control advocate. Finally it came to me — Margaret Mead! That’s the one.
Correct answer: Margaret Mead

Post-answer thoughts: Mead was progressive in her views for her time, but her anthropological methods were criticized later.
2. The term "NPC" is familiar and innocuous in the world of video games but has entered the broader slang vernacular as a derogatory term for a person accused of being incapable of thinking for themselves. What do the letters in "NPC" stand for?
Pre-answer thoughts: I’ve heard this term a lot in the past few years as an internet slang, so I’m confident this means non-playable character.
Correct answer: Non-player/Non-playable character
Was I correct? Yes.

Post-answer thoughts: I thought this might be on the easier side but I would’ve never thought 86% would know it. Maybe an NPC being the main character of the Ryan Reynolds movie Free Guy helped out with this get rate.
3. The "Old" version of what major city is enclosed within the walls built beginning in 1638 during the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan?
Pre-answer thoughts: “Old” in the question is doing a lot of work. I assume this is Delhi, since New Delhi is the capital of India. Don’t want to over think this one.
Correct answer: Delhi

4. The ratification of the thirteenth amendment to the US Constitution codified the constitutionality of an executive order issued three years prior that, though enforced (to a degree), was of debated constitutional validity. What was the name of this executive order?
Pre-answer thoughts: This should be Emancipation Proclamation, right? I’m pretty sure there was a direct line from that to the 13th Amendment.
Correct answer: Emancipation Proclamation
Was I correct? Yes.

Post-answer thoughts: One thing I remember about the Emancipation Proclamation was that while it freed the slaves in the Confederate states, it didn’t free slaves in states where slavery wasn’t illegal but were still part of the Union, such as Missouri.
5. Beginning with 1934's The Thin Man, William Powell and Myrna Loy appeared together as jovial married detectives and tipplers with what first names? Their bibulousness is so iconic that these names are now used for a specific cocktail glass.
Pre-answer thoughts: I do not remember who these bibulous characters are, and the thing I know most about The Thin Man is the dog named Asta often shows up on crossword puzzles. I apologize for disappointing my parents, who are big old-school Hollywood movie lovers.
Correct answer: Nick and Nora
Was I correct? No.

Post-answer thoughts: A lot of classic Hollywood movies like this still get played on TCM, so it’s sad to see David Zaslav, the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, trying to gut that channel along with many others (such as HBO) all because he doesn’t think a giant media conglomerate isn’t profitable enough.
6. "What are the real names of Cary Grant, Tony Curtis, and Joan Crawford?" is the correct "question" to an "answer" that appeared not on an actual Jeopardy! episode, but on what other television series?
Pre-answer thoughts: I definitely watched this as I prepared for being on Jeopardy! a few years ago. This is from a classic episode of Cheers in which Cliff Clavin, a local mailman and bar regular, gets to appear on a Boston-based Jeopardy! episode. He amasses a big lead early, but misses Final Jeopardy and loses all of his money. His response: “Who are three people who have never been in my kitchen?”
Correct answer: Cheers

Post-answer thoughts: Nowadays, Final Jeopardy wagering has become a much more strategic affair, and “pulling a Cliff Clavin” is a longtime slang for Jeopardy! viewers about contestants who wager too much despite having an insurmountable lead going into Final.
Result: Win over RifkinB, 7(5)-6(5)
Current Standings in Rundle A Byzantium: 7-12-4 (26th of 30)
Private Rundle Result: Win over AefskySA, 6(5)-5(4)
Current Standings in Private Rundle: 15-6-2 (3rd of 10)
Overall thoughts: I’m eliminated from contention for winning my private rundle, but I’m still right on the cusp of relegation in Rundle A:
The top 25 stay up top, and I have the same number of points as 25th place, but he has a much better point differential than me, and probably not one I can catch up to in such a short time. So I still need some wins and some luck going into the final two Match Days this week.
