LearnedLeague 97 Match Day 17 Recap
As I wilt in Rundle A, is this season turning into "product, place, price, relegation?"
Match Day 17
1. In the 1810s, some English workers and craftsmen who had been impacted by the advanced mechanization of the Industrial Revolution expressed their resentment by attacking the machinery and factories that had cost them their livelihoods. They became known by what name, after a legendary character who had smashed two knitting frames in a "fit of passion" (a name that today refers to individuals with similar antitechnology attitudes)?
Pre-answer thoughts: While I’m not sure about the famous character, I’m almost certain this term for an anti-technology person is a Luddite.
Correct answer: Luddite

Post-answer thoughts: The character namesake in question is Ned Ludd, who was most likely an apocryphal figure.
2. The musical instrument known in some circles as a tam-tam is also widely known by what other name, which was used in the title of a television show that featured the instrument prominently and first aired in 1976?
Pre-answer thoughts: My guess is that tam-tam would be a percussion instrument, but what shows from that era prominently featured an instrument and had it in the title? After racking my brain for a few minutes, I remembered The Gong Show, a campy low-rent precursor to shows like America’s Got Talent. So it has to be a gong.
Correct answer: Gong

Post-answer thoughts: The movie Confessions of a Dangerous Mind starred the always excellent Sam Rockwell as Chuck Barris, the Gong Show host who later claimed he was a CIA agent.
3. An incomplete flower is defined as a flower lacking in one or more of the structures that constitute a complete flower. Those structures are the sepals, petals, stamen, and what fourth (which itself comprises the stigma, style, and ovary)?
Pre-answer thoughts: I don’t know much about flowers really, so I’m clueless on this one. Is this the bud? I’ll try that, but I’m not feeling good about it.
Correct answer: Pistil/Carpel
Was I correct? No.

Post-answer thoughts: I really need to up my science game in the future. This one was a 65% get rate and yet I had no idea.
4. A figure skater approaches in a long curve, launches from the left back outside edge with assistance from the right toe, and turns counterclockwise before landing on the outside back edge of the right foot. This skater has just performed what maneuver, one of the few jumps that takes off counter to the natural rotation of the edge?
Pre-answer thoughts: I was never a huge figure skating fan but I’ll watch it during the Olympics, and I’m pretty sure two of the major jumps are the axel and the lutz. But I know I always hear how difficult the axel is when anyone attempts it, and that seems more well-known as a tough maneuver, so I’ll go with that.
Correct answer: Lutz

Post-answer thoughts: It was lutz! A rare sports miss for me. Props to my opponent who still gave me 2 on this despite my .822 get rate in the category.
5. Introductory courses in marketing often present a "marketing mix" composed of the "Four P's". Three of the four are place, price, and promotion—traditionally, and most often, what is the fourth (which is usually listed first)?
Pre-answer thoughts: Thinking in my head about other business-related words that start with “P” — the only one I think can think of that fits here is “product.” After all, you can’t have the other three without a product, right?
Correct answer: Product
Was I correct? Yes.

Post-answer thoughts: Not much more to say on this one, other than it’s the second question of the day that is basically “name this 4th thing in a list of 4 after we give you the other 3.”
6. What French word is the basic equivalent of the German Ziegenkäse and the Italian caprino? Some examples categorized by this word include Bucheron, Chabis, Chavroux, Valençay, and Montrachet.
Pre-answer thoughts: These are cheeses, right? In that case I guess it has to be fromage. Oui?
Correct answer: Chevre

Private Rundle Result: Tied CohenJ13, 4(3)-4(4)

Overall thoughts: I really thought I had 5 today (with axel and fromage as incorrect guesses), but I messed up those two and my opponent played perfect defense, and now I’m second to last in Rundle A. It’s looking like relegation back to Rundle B will be a reality soon.
